While at Kilaurwen we asked about visiting Stone Mountain Vineyards, as it has been on our "need to visit" list for a while now. We were told it was quite close, and also told NOT to follow GPS, (and they gave us good directions). Stone Mountain is also located at 1,700 feet up on a mountain, hence the name. I was glad no one was coming downhill when we were going up, but the road wasn't nearly as bad as some Yelp commentators have written. The facility seems to fit right into the mountainside.
The tasting room has polished pine floors and a tasting bar made from pine. Before we started a tasting we were told that the Bacon Hollow Revenuers' Select, their most popular wine, was sold out.
Our tasting included the Stone Mountain Pinot Grigio, Viognier, Chardonnay, Chardonnay Reserve, Bacon Hollow Sunset, Merlot, Cabernet Franc Reserve, Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve, Twelve Barrels Meritage, Petit Verdot, a blush wine called Maquillage; and a blend of Cabernet Franc, Grape Brandy and cherry juice called Yellow Branch Cherry. It was late in the day, and so the tasting was a bit rushed, and our notes were very sketchy. We purchased a bottle of the 2011 Reserve Chardonnay, which we were told was aged in Hungarian oak.
The winery has a large observation deck overlooking the Shenandoah Valley. Even on a hazy day the view is awesome. There is a nice view, just down hill, of their Chardonnay and Petit Verdot vines - they have a total of 21 acres of grapes at various sites on the mountain. If you are on the Monticello wine trail the winery is worth a visit just for the view.
