Delaplane Cellars

It was time for another Delaplane Cellars wine maker's dozen club pickup.  We headed out on Saturday to visit the tasting room to taste the new wine and pick up our club selections.

Delaplane Cellars Tasting Room
The tasting room was busy when we arrived.  We had a pleasant surprise too.  Our friend Jackie was there greeting folks and ringing up sales.  We settled in for a tasting in this brightly lit, modern tasting room.  Delaplane also had a musical duo playing soft rock and pop hits such as Jimmy Buffet, the Eagles, and even the Monkees.

There was one white on the tasting, a 2011 Maggie's Viognier.  The Viognier was a flavorful, crisp white. We tried the 2011 Merlot and the 2011 Cabernet Franc.  These 2011 vintages were lighter than previous vintages, but very flavorful. The 2011 Merlot was part of the club pickup.

The 2010 Shirland Shiraz was accompanied by special treat that had smoked duck breast, a dollop of sweet potato puree, bacon beluga lentils and a drizzle of red wine Tasmanian pepper syrup, all piled on a water cracker. This Shiraz is a big, bold red, dark purple in color, filled with dark fruit flavors.  This wine was also part of the cub pickup.

We asked about the 2011 Chardonnay and Betsy Dolphin opened one of the few bottles left for us to taste. It was tasting very well indeed. I have had this Chardonnay before and can say that aging several months in the bottle has greatly improved this wine.  We purchased one bottle and took it up to the Retreat, the members-only loft.  This was one especially fine Chardonnay, which we enjoyed with the finger foods available that day.  We re-corked the bottle to finish this Chardonnay at home.

We had a very pleasant time at Delaplane Cellars.  If you visit Delaplane Cellars tell them you read about their winery at Wine About Virginia.
