New winery: Meriwether Springs

We were driving on Owensville Road on our way from Glass House to another winery when we drove past Meriwether Springs Vineyard.  We did a U-turn to check them out. We had heard a rumor about a new winery and here it was.
This place is brand new and isn't even listed yet at Virginiawine.org.  The grand opening was over the 4th of July weekend, although they had the  "soft" opening Memorial Day weekend.  Meriwether Springs is owned by Ed and Regina Pierce.  They have planted 4.5 to 5 acres of vineyard with 4000 vines of Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay, Merlot, and Petit Verdot.  The vineyard is situated on the original estate of the famed explorer, Meriwether Lewis.
Meriwether Springs have leased 2 acres of Chardonnay and Merlot in Hanover, Va. and anticipate their first wine offering in Spring, 2014.  In the meantime, they currently feature other fine Virginia wines, mostly from outside of the Monticello area, in their tasting room.
The event center, which overlooks the vineyard, includes two separate event spaces, a nice tasting room, a full-service caterer’s kitchen, and a bridal loft. The event center has a porch and a deck. It is situated on a 40 acre property that includes hiking trails, a couple ponds and a lake. Meriwether Springs summer hours are Friday 12pm -8 pm; Saturday and Sunday 12pm - 6pm.

We wish the Pierce's well in this exciting venture, and look forward to going back at some point in the future. When you visit, tell them you read about Meriwether Springs on Wine About Virginia.
